Accounting Specialist I

The Accounting Specialist I is responsible for processing commission related payments, accounting entries and reports. Performs data reconciliation, research commission related payment and provides assistance to other agency team members.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Accurate posting of property and casualty direct bill commission downloads
  • Analysis and process items in suspense
  • Prepare reports and correct any discrepancies using excel
  • Retrieve all company commission statements for processing and distribute accordingly
  • Be accountable for all credit entries on daily bank spreadsheet
  • Reconcile commission statements to payments received from carriers
  • Record general ledger allocation to the appropriate branch and department for funds received
  • Manually process statements that are not available as downloads
  • Sort and barcode all commission statements for scanning
  • Review, report, and follow up on aged receivables for agency bill accounts
  • Enter weekly disbursements for customer refunds and return commissions to companies
  • Handle petty cash  – record all transactions and balance out cash
  • Assist with client payments to carriers
  • Back up for Receptionist
  • All other duties and projects as assigned by Manager


  • Associated Degree in Accounting or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of general accounting clerical work experience
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively under tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access files cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Constantly using hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment (copy machine, label machine, etc.)
  • Work takes place in a well-lighted, heated, and/or air conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation
