Team Member Spotlight is a new McClone blog series that will introduce you to the amazing individuals at the heart of who we are and what we do. Every month, you will learn more about what makes us tick as you get to know our diverse team. From HR consultants, IT personnel and administrative associates to account managers and sales leaders, our team members are dedicated to client success and community involvement.

This month meet Missy Spoehr, an account manager in commercial lines. Missy has been with us for about six years now and is based out of our corporate office in Menasha. She started as a department assistant, and last year was promoted to an account manager, working directly with clients

Let’s learn more about her.

What is your role at McClone?

Account managers are usually the first line of communication for clients, so I spend a lot of time answering questions about business insurance, including billing, types of coverages, and so on. I also help with quoting and insurance renewals. For complex insurance questions, I partner with our risk advisors to help clients get the answers they need for their specific situations. It’s definitely a team effort.

Along with my account manager duties, I am the subject matter expert for our new customer relationship management software system. We went live a little over a year ago and are putting workflows in place to better support our clients. I work closely with our team to troubleshoot challenges and find ways to make the system work best for our team.

Why do you choose to work at McClone?

The culture and the McClone family. Almost four years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was pregnant at the time and one day I got this diagnosis, and I was pretty much out of the office after that. The team around me and the McClone family were just so fantastic, and that is a big part of what keeps me here.

There was support, there were fundraisers, and they always said, “Just take care of yourself and your job will be waiting when you get back.” So I never had to worry about that. You hear stories about other people who lose their jobs because of illness, and that was never the feeling that I got. The culture here is a family. The leadership team would send me messages saying, “We’re praying for you, let us know if there is anything we can help with.”  Ever since that, I have never wanted to look or go elsewhere.

What are some of your favorite things about your workday?

The people. We have a really good group here and I am close to a lot of the people I work with. I love the company culture and my interactions with clients are almost always positive. I enjoy the opportunity to build relationships with our clients and improve their experiences. All those things add up to someplace I want to come to every day. I never have that feeling of “Ugh, I don’t want to go!” Well, OK, everyone has days they would rather go to the beach, but I never want to avoid coming to work.

What are you ambitious about at work or life in general?

To keep up with our business growth, we need to continue to grow as a team. I feel strongly about learning ways to improve internally, so we can keep serving our clients, and therefore our communities, better every day. It’s exciting to see how far we have come in the past year and to think about how much further we will go!

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of McClone?

I am married with two great kids. My son is 5 years old and my daughter is 3 years old, plus we have three dogs, so that keeps us busy. I spend a lot of time baking with my kids. Some of our favorites to make are cake, bread, cinnamon rolls and cookies, but we’re not too picky. In the summer, I love to spend time in my garden with my family. The kids have fun seeing the plants grow and watching for vegetables and fruit to harvest.

Recently somebody told me they moved here to raise a family because they heard it was a good community. That was kind of eye-opening. I’ve lived in Appleton, Wisconsin, my whole life. You just take for granted what you have when you don’t know what else is out there. I’m thankful this is what I know.
