As a member of the WI Cranberry Growers Association, we have the privilege of meeting with many growers at various trade shows and events throughout the year. In meeting with one such grower, we explained our risk management process and how our team would invest valuable time in order gain a full understanding of their farm, which would help drive down their risk and secure the future of their operations. Once we went through the process and uncovered various areas of risk, our team of Risk Advisors were able to provide this grower with risk management solutions uniquely tailored to their operation, and that protected their business.
After meeting with the owner and completing the site tour of the farm, we not only uncovered some serious gaps in the way that their irrigation equipment was scheduled, but also some major contractual risks related to the hiring of trucking for the transport of their harvested crop. We also made several suggestions to help control other risks that their business faced.
We focused on ensuring that our client had a full understanding in regard to the hired trucking contracts and the risks that he was exposed to as a result of the contracts. Also, we determined that we needed to minimize the irrigation equipment gap through updated documentation.
Due to the wording of the contracts, we were able to uncover potential risks and minimize our client’s exposure to potential misfortunes. In regards to the irrigation equipment, we were able to assist the client in creating a new equipment inventory list for all cranberry related equipment, both scheduled and non-scheduled.
We stay actively involved with the operation though periodic farm visits and continue to monitor for any changes in existing contracts, as well as verify any changes in equipment. Additionally, we continue to proactively interact with the grower and focus our attention to detail and lowering their overall fixed costs of doing business.
